For the first time in the Utica area, you’ll get to see magnificent sculptures designed and built with thousands of donated cans of food. This visually and structurally stunning Canned Art exhibit will be at Sangertown Square from Friday, April 19 until Sunday, April 21.
Since 1992, over 100 cities in the U.S., Canada, Netherlands, and Australia have held CANSTRUCTION® Competitions and all of the food generated from the event in New Hartford will be donated to Feed Our Vets and the Greater Utica Food Resources, Inc.
Four teams are competing this year: MetLife, GPO Federal Credit Union, Sodexo Quality of Life Services, and Zion Lutheran Church. Employees and members of each organization donate all of the cans and “canstruct” the artwork.
I am one of the sponsors (The American Institute of Architects is a partner of the national CANSTRUCTION that produces the events) and to me, the best part is watching the “artists/designers” build the sculptures. They have 12 hours each to complete their creations and you can stop by Sangertown Square on Friday and Saturday afternoons, April 19 and 20, to see the works in progress.
You, the public, can participate by donating cans of food as the price of admission to view these awesome structures.
Sponsors of this inaugural Utica, New York CANSTRUCTION® include: yours truly, D. Berkhoudt, Architect, P.C.; Sangertown Square; Hannaford Supermarkets; Zion Lutheran Church, Sodexo Quality of Life Services, MetLife, GPO Federal Credit Union; Alesia & Crewell, Architects P.C.; Indoff Commercial Interiors, HR Beebe Incorporated, Jay-K Lumber; A&P Master Images; and Avalon Document Services
Please come enjoy the artwork and help us to “CANstruct a World Without Hunger.”
See you there!
Dan Berkhoudt, Architect
